Are Weblogs a passing fad or a revolutionary new form of communication and publishing? That's still an open question, but the presence of blogs in the academic environment makes it more likely that they'll survive and thrive in the long term.
Besonders interessant allerdings sind die verschiedenen Statements als Antwort auf die Frage: online Journalism Review: When did you first discover Weblogs and describe your "A-ha!" moment when you realized they might change social discourse.

Alex Halavais: The discovery happened over time -- I'm still not completely sure I know what a blog is! I had updated my own Web site periodically (generally monthly) by hand, from about 1998 on. In a course I was teaching in 1999 at the University of Washington, I realized I didn't want a threaded discussion, I wanted chronologically organized topics with a way to respond, and so I wrote a piece of blogging software that would allow for this interaction. The students -- once they got used to it -- reacted very favorably.

The Adopt a Blog project began in response to the second major blocking measure taken by the government of the People's Republic of China against blogging services. The first such measure was taken against Blogger's free Blogspot hosting service on January 8, 2003. That block is still in place today. The more recent block of Typepad blogs began on March 25, 2004, and is also still in effect.

The Adopt a Blog project is not a political agenda seeking to oppose the PRC or its policies. It is not confined to any particular country. It was founded strictly to uphold free speech, regardless of content. Its main idea is: we spread out our blogs, and when they block a blog, we move it elsewhere.

Above all the American solider should ask himself or herself the following question: What is his feeling when his own country occupied by foreign forces irrespective of whether they liberated him from a tyrant or not? Just ask yourself this question and keep the answer with you soon when your feet touch the Iraqi soil! Next thing you have to know that you are in a different society than yours. Let me give you an example. If a foreign particle enters your body your immunity will isolate then attack it by special antibodies. Therefore this particle should behave genuinely as part of the body! You should not make yourself superior to the people there and should show that you do care for that part of the world and its people as if you are one of them....

Das Jugenmagazin versteht sich als Sprachrohr für die Anliegen und Interessen der jungen Generation in der Region Basel. Sollte man seine Leserinnen und Leser Fragen bevor man bestimmte Bilder in der Zeitung druckt? Die Greeley Tribune hat's getan. Chris Cobler Redaktor der Zeitung veröffentlicht die Ergebinsse dieser ungewöhnlichen Umfrage in seinem Blog.

Steve Outing dazu:That's a wonderful idea. Editors won't always have the time for seeking input before making a decision -- and of course they're not bound to abide by what they hear in public comments -- but this is a model I'd like to see copied. The more voices and perspectives heard, the less likely that poor editorial decisions will be made.

Die API Media Center MediaMorphosis-Konferenz läuft. Hier einige Zitate aus dem Blog-Pannel:

Esther Dyson: Bloggers need to figure out what they are. If you're a journalist, you follow journalistic ethics regardless of where you publish. Bloggers need to figure out whether they are journalists or bloggers.

Howard Rheingold: The blog space is still very young. There is a self-correcting mechanisms that will deal with issues of fairness.

Jake Tapper: I don't trust all the bloggers. But maybe there is an opportunity to mimic some of the edge bloggers have without losing journalism values.

Larry Kramer: Newspapers don't have an exclusive right to create community. Other media can provide that function.

And finally, the question that Dan Gillmor has been asked for 187th time: Why do you do it?

His reply: "My readers know more than I do." Good answer.
