The first circulation numbers of online digital-replica editions of newspapers in Germany have been published. The German Audit Bureau of Circulation, IVW, counts those "e-paper editions" in addition to printed circulation if they are paid for separately and the usage can be proven. Three regional German newspapers have asked for their editions to be counted, although there are a lot more papers that already offer such digital-replica services or plan to offer them in the near future.
On the first glance the numbers are sobering. Abendzeitung from Munich for example, a tabloid newspaper with an average circulation of 144,000, has gained 11 subscribers. Sächsische Zeitung from Dresden sold 180 paid subscriptions and Rhein-Zeitung 1,801. But in my opinion it is much too early to declare the failure of these endeavors, as for example Die Welt does. The results in contrast show how important it is for newspapers to listen to the expectations and habits of their readers.
