"Interaktivität strikes back"

Dan Gillmor - "We the Media": Von der Theorie zur Praxis

I hope to pull together something useful that helps enable -- and demonstrates -- the emerging grassroots journalism that I wrote about in my recent book. Something powerful is happening, it's in the early stages and I have a chance to help figure this out.

I'm not ready to discuss the specifics yet, mainly because I have many more ideas than I could possibly try to put into practice at this point -- and we're early in the process of working out the venture's actual form.

Keep in mind that this project is now in what's known as the seed stage. It's not an operating entity yet, though I expect it will be. But we're some time away from that, with many issues to resolve in the meantime.

A friend who knew about this ahead of time asked the question I'm sure some others will ask: "Are you nuts?" I hope not. Of course, I amleaving one of the best gigs in journalism. The Merc has been incredibly good to me. There are so many talented and good-hearted folks here.

I hate the idea of leaving. But I'd hate not trying this even more.

Obviously, there will be much more to say in the days and weeks ahead...

Herzliche Gratulation ! Man darf gespannt sein.

Give people the control of media ... naja fast ;-)

Aus der Corante-Serie The Future of Digital Media: Nicht mehr ganz neu aber nicht minder interessant ein Interview mit Jeff Jarvis:

Jarvis' First Law of Media: Give the people control of media, they will use it. The corollary: Don't give the people control of media, and you will lose.

Big media has a great deal to learn from citizens' media. First and foremost, old media lost its humanity. It no longer knows how to talk to us eye-to-eye and it certainly doesn't know how to listen. It refuses to admit that it could be human and make mistakes (see Dan Rather, see Howell Raines). Big media must learn that news isn't over when it's printed and fishwrap; that is when the real story cycle begins, when the public asks questions and adds facts and corrects mistakes and adds perspective and helps get closer to the truth. Big media has to learn to be more honest -- that is, to level with its public, to reveal its prejudices and process as citizen journalists do. (...)

Whenever citizens can exercise control, they will. Today they are challenging and changing media -- where bloggers now fact-check Dan Rather's ass -- but tomorrow they will challenge and change politics, government, marketing, and education as well. This isn't just a media revolution, though that's where we are seeing the impact first. This is a chain-reaction of revolutions. It has just begun.

Buzzword: Citizen Journalism?

"Citizen journalism" is one of those buzzwords that's hot in our industry right now. (You also may have heard it called "participatory" or "open-source" journalism.) While some journalists might hope it's a fad that will go away soon, I don't think that's likely.

Inviting the public to participate in online news publishing by contributing articles and photographs is likely here to stay -- indeed, it might allow journalism institutions to renew some of the public trust they've lost in recent years by inviting the public in instead of keeping them outside the ropes.

Aktivität: Journalismus

Journalism isn't a profession, but an activity. And it's an activity that technology is putting within the reach of many more Americans. That's bad news if you're Dan Rather, but it's good news for the rest of us. Glenn Reynolds
