"Fragmentation is good"

It used to be, we waited for the news -- when the paper was plopped on our doorstep, when the show came on the TV. Now the news waits for us -- we get what we want when and where we want it. More news is good. Choice is good. Citizens controlling their media is good. Fragmentation is good.

Open Source Journalism - PJ-Projekt: Community-Zeitung

Interessantes und ehrgeiziges "Participatory Journalism"-Projekt in Form einer Community-Zeitung:

The Bakersfield Californian has embarked on one of the most ambitious participatory journalism efforts to date in the United States, launching a community newspaper and Web site in which nearly all the articles and pictures are contributed for free by people in the community.

Since the first print edition of The Northwest Voice was launched May 13, more than 200 individuals have contributed articles, pictures and events, and revenue has grown 33 percent. In all, about 90 percent of the content on the Web site and in the newspaper is contributed by the community.

"In a world in which a growing number of readers are becoming publishers, we ignore this trend at our own peril," says Mary Lou Fulton, the publisher of The Northwest Voice and the New Product Development Manager for The Bakersfield Californian. "The open source model offers us a new way to connect with readers, to better understand their worries and joys, and to enable them to share some of themselves with the world. It gives readers a personal and emotional stake in our products, and I believe that is critical to the future of our industry."

Public Journalism-Modell OhmyNews.com

Interessanter Aktikel bei Newsweek über die südkoreanische news-Seite ohmynews.com die nach dem Prinzip "every citizen is a reporter" funktioniert:

Critics from traditional news publishers in Korea charge that OhmyNews confuses message board posting with news, and that getting to the truth in any story requires painstaking reporting and editing by trained professionals. But OhmyNews’s audience—primarily in their 20s and 30s—may not agree. When some Yonsei University students recently met with a visiting reporter to discuss the future of news, one psychology major put it simply: “How can you ever get truth from one source? The Internet allows us to check multiple sources, to explore message-board postings, to debate issues with others—that is the only way to find truth. And besides, what good is information if you can’t react to it?” “We’re not stupid,” added a business student. “We know that there is a difference between a message board, a traditional journal and OhmyNews. But by putting them together, our understanding is better. We can piece together truth.”

Public Journalism Education Group

Andrea Frantz hat eine "Public Journalism Education Group" ins Leben gerufen:

The Public Journalism Education group provides a forum for journalism educators and practitioners with an interest in civic or public journalism.

The discussions will primarily focus on issues and challenges facing journalism educators as they incorporate public journalism assignments and/or classes into existing curricula, brainstorming for solutions to such challenges, how journalism schools respond to the changing technological and social needs reflecting in the public journalism movement, and developing a research agenda for the immediate future.

This discussion group will work as an extension of the Public Journalism Education subcommittee initiated by the Civic Journalism Interest Group of AEJMC.

Partizipation statt Redaktion

Fragen Sie Ihre Leser zuerst...

Steve Outing dazu:That's a wonderful idea. Editors won't always have the time for seeking input before making a decision -- and of course they're not bound to abide by what they hear in public comments -- but this is a model I'd like to see copied. The more voices and perspectives heard, the less likely that poor editorial decisions will be made.

Und auch Chris Cobler wertete die Aktion als Erfolg: An Experiment worth repeating.

MediaMorphosis-Report

Die API Media Center MediaMorphosis-Konferenz läuft. Hier einige Zitate aus dem Blog-Pannel:

Esther Dyson: Bloggers need to figure out what they are. If you're a journalist, you follow journalistic ethics regardless of where you publish. Bloggers need to figure out whether they are journalists or bloggers.

Howard Rheingold: The blog space is still very young. There is a self-correcting mechanisms that will deal with issues of fairness.

Jake Tapper: I don't trust all the bloggers. But maybe there is an opportunity to mimic some of the edge bloggers have without losing journalism values.

Larry Kramer: Newspapers don't have an exclusive right to create community. Other media can provide that function.

And finally, the question that Dan Gillmor has been asked for 187th time: Why do you do it?

His reply: "My readers know more than I do." Good answer.

Besprochen wurden allerdings noch eine Vielzahl weiterer interessanter Themen. Die vollständige Berichterstattung der Konferenz gibt's von Howard Finberg bei poyneter.org. Und hier gibt's das Konferenz-Weblog dazu.
