I didn't think, given the scrappy newsrooms from which I sprang, the day would come when I'd say the responsibility for the decline of newspapers as the principal platform for journalism is shared equally by the journalists and the publishers. But that day has come. Shame on you both.

Here is the litany of shame that echoes in newsroom after newsroom:

We don't have the money.
We don't have the time.
We don't have the people.
We have lousy editors.
We have lousy reporters.
We can't communicate.
We don't talk.
We don't listen.

Things were better when …

We had more people.
We zoned.
We didn't zone.
We had more money.
So-and-so was editor.
We did more (name your beat) reporting.
We did less (ditto).

Yes, my friends in the newsroom, there's less money and there are fewer people. That's not really your fault - although it wasn't TV news and the web and shifting demographics alone that drove the readers away. Boring stories, formulaic content and refusal to change with the times are all also culprits.

But, I am sorry, my friends in the newsroom, much of the rest is your fault. The journalism, the leadership, the mandate to reflect and engage your community, the necessity to make tough, but creative decisions in the face of conflict, as all industries must do from time to time - those are all your responsibilities and you have abdicated them.

Mit der Studie sollte untersucht werden, wie stark das Internet die journalistische Recherchearbeit beeinflusst. Die Ergebnisse: Medienmacher recherchieren mittlerweile deutlich mehr online als offline. Und: Journalisten orientieren sich im Zeitalter des Internets noch stärker an Leitmedien - da diese mit Hilfe des weltweiten Datennetzes einfach, komfortabel und in Echtzeit gesichtet werden können. Die Vermutung, dass die zunehmende Nutzung des Internets als Rechercheinstrument auch zu einer verstärkten Verbreitung von Falschmeldungen führe, wurde dagegen eindeutig widerlegt. Vielmehr ergab die Studie, dass die Aufklärungsquote von Fakes durch das Internet gestiegen ist - ebenso wie die Aufklärungsgeschwindigkeit.

I'm not certain there's anyone left who still questions whether bloggers can be journalists. At the same time, most pros still use demeaning term "citizen journalism".

I don't know what "citizen journalism" means, but I don't think it'll be too long before we can just erase the word "citizen" as a meaningless qualifier. After all, professional journalists become so objective that they're not citizens any more?

Ein Link vom lieben Schockwellenreiter sendet mir heute einen Haufen neuer Besucher, die unter anderem die Frage aufwerfen, ob das hier Satire ist.

Glaubt mir, es ist real. Ich wünschte mir, dem wäre nicht so. Trotzdem bin recht guter Dinge. Zum einen bringen mich meine Erlebnisse beim Arbeitsamt wirklich zum lachen. Und Lachen hilft. Der erste Besuch beim Amt war so obskur, ich konnte nicht anders -- ich mußte diesen Blog starten.

So, das wäre also geklärt,.... hier geht's ja schliesslich um Glaubwürdigkeit ;-))

Our nation's founders saw the press as an essential element to the functioning of a healthy democracy. They envisioned an ongoing public discourse that would drive debate and policy, and saw the press as a vital venue for that discourse. Toward that end, early U.S. newspapers were participatory in nature. They included personal news, eyewitness accounts and other elements that made them part of the fabric of their communities.

In some ways, blogs might help to restore such a model. They could easily supplement traditional media outlets, giving voice to less-publicized people, causes and points of view. They also could force mainstream media outlets to maintain high standards and take a fresh look at the subjects they cover.

Not every blog is a news outlet. But shouldn't it be up to readers to decide what's news and what isn't?

What is happening is, in short, a revolution in the way young people are accessing news. They don’t want to rely on the morning paper for their up-to-date information. They don’t want to rely on a God-like figure from above to tell them what’s important. And to carry the religion analogy a bit further, they certainly don’t want news presented as gospel.

Das Web-Hosting-Unternehmen Hostway hat die Ergebnisse einer Umfrage über Blogging veröffentlicht. Demnach sind 80 Prozent der insgesamt 2500 Teilnehmer der Meinung, dass Bloggern die Veröffentlichung von persönlichen Informationen über Dritte nicht erlaubt sein sollte.
