Jeff Jarvis und die Neue Journalisten-Schule: Congratulations

Jeff Jarvis ( Blog: Buzzmachine) wurde zum director of the new-media program and associate professor an der new Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York ernannt. Herzliche Gratulation!!

Mr. Jarvis, 51, has been developing the new-media curriculum for CUNY's journalism program since last year. As part of the core curriculum, all students will be required to take at least one new-media class exploring digital journalism. Mr. Jarvis said that the media could achieve greater transparency by using blogs, podcasts and online video. "I want students to explore the relationship of the media with the public," he said.

Hier sein persönlicher Blogeintrag dazu. Wo er unter anderem neben seinen Beweggründen auf die Seiten der neuen Schule: Graduate School of Journalism at the City University of New York, hinweist.

One more thing: Here’s fair warning that I’ll be coming after many of you to come speak with our students about how you view news in media new and old, and also will be asking you to interact with students via webcasts and your blogs, turning you all into journalism professors with me: The beginnings of the school’s web site are here. And if you’re interested in applying, email admissions@journalism.cuny.edu

Zeitungen, das Internet und die Kannibalisierung

Interessante Studie von Matthew Gentzkow (University of Chicago) zu Online- und Print-Publikationen:

University of Chicago economist Matthew Gentzkow has analyzed the competition between online and print newspapers, using The Washington Post and washingtonpost.com as examples. He finds that the online paper reduces print readership by 30,000 per day and print profit by $5.7 million per year.

But, he says, "barring dramatic changes in tastes or technology, online news does not appear to threaten the survival of print media.... the welfare beneits of the online newspaper appear to outweigh its costs. Consumers gain $42 million a year from free provision of the online paper, and although the arm appeared
to suffer a net loss during the 2000-2003 period, an improved advertising market means that the current annual effect on firm products is probably positive."
