How to boil an egg ... ;-)

Every journalist graduating from school today needs to understand the importance of hyperlinks in the online environment, and the ways that online stories can be enhanced using audio, video, Flash, PDF source documents, or user-generated materials. They need to know the importance of the community of users, and how crucial engagement is in the survival of their news operations.

I really think print journalists should know how to record and edit audio and compose and take decent photographs (even short videos) at a bare minimum, and know how to insert hyperlinks into a news story. But knowing those skills won't make you a journalist, any more than knowing how to boil an egg will make you a chef.

The Hype vs. Reality vs. What People Value: Emerging Collaborative News Models and the Future of News

There is much confusion over the hype vs. reality of collaborative news and interactive technology’s impact. What is out there? How should the emergence of these innovations be analyzed? How do they differ from the communication and knowledge offered by traditional news formats? How do they change the engagement of citizens to each other and to societal issues? And following from any resolution to this confusion, how can they be used to improve news media for the future? The scope of this paper cannot fully address all these questions, but it will provide a starting outline on some...

The Project Documentary team includes: Jason Crow, Shaun Clarke, Darcie Deangelo, Amy Mertl, Buz Owen, Jason Ong, Matt Landry, Mayana Leocadio. Read what "Journalism.co.uk" had to say about it:

Citizen journalism film released online
By: Oliver Luft

Cambridge Community Television (CCTV) - a US based electronic media public training forum - has released online an educational video about the history of citizen journalism.

The 15-minute documentary Citizen Journalism: From Pamphlet to Blog is a guide to US citizen journalism through the ages - from Thomas Paine in the 18th century to the more modern hows and whys of being an anti-establishment news hound.

The film features interviews with talking heads from the blogging world - including Ethan Zuckerman of Global Voices - discussing, among other things, how newspapers have gone through major cost-cutting exercises as their revenues are leeched by sites like Craigslist.

Axel Springers Second Life

Beim Guardian gelesen:

The weird and wonderful parallel cyber-community that is Second Life is to get its first tabloid. Axel Springer, the publisher of Germany's top-selling Bild newspaper, is poised to launch a weekly paper designed to sate the virtual population's appetite for news and gossip.

News aus dem anderen Leben: Von virtuellen Journalisten in Second Life

Interview mit Adam Reuters, aka Adam Pasick, Chef des virtuellen Reuters-Büro in Second Life:

pasick adam-reuters

Q: How do the methods Reuters’ reporters use in the real world, in places like Iraq or on Wall Street, apply in a simulation game?
Adam: It shows that the Reuters editorial principles translate pretty well, whether you are in Bagdad or whether you are in this 3-D virtual world. Being unbiased, being accurate, being fast, all the things that Reuters strives for, they hold true in just about any environment in which you would want to report the news. Obviously, you need to adapt to the fact that you have things like anonymous avatars, but the principles are still the same.
