Das Web und die Kriegsbilder - Internet an Pictures of War

Steve Outings neue Kolumne befasst sich mit Kriegs-Bildern im Netz:

While there are some legitimate reasons for traditional media like newspapers and television to shield the public from children with severed arms and dead Iraqi soldiers lying in ditches, there's no excuse for online media not to show the full picture of war and its aftermath. Online news operations can operate by different rules -- and I would argue that they should.

New hybrid Online Genre - Journalism+Education ?

Die New York Times berichtet von einem speziellen Projekt: NewsHour Extra Web site: http://www.pbs.org/newshour.extra/.

Dieses Projekt wird von Lehrern und Journalisten gemeinsam geführt. Die NY-Times spricht dabei von of a new hybrid online genre — part daily journalism, part education — that has taken shape during the war.
Naja, ....wie wäre es denn gewesen, wenn man diese Projekte in Weblog-Form geführt hätte ??

Hier geht's zur N.Y. Times: New Online Genre Supplies Lessons on the War in Iraq

Und ebenso Informationen dazu gibt's bei onlinejournalism.com:

The Iraq war has fostered a new hybrid informational site, which is part-news and part-education reports The New York Times. These mini-sites offer lesson plans and news and resource links and are maintained by both journalists and teachers. The sites are used in high schools to integrate traditional lessons and current events to enhance learning. For example, a lesson on Mesopotamian history and the recent looting of Iraqi artifacts was posted at NewsHourExtra and created by news editor, Leah Clapman and Lisa Greeves, a former teacher.

The news-education lessons have been given greater impetus by the war and more importantly students' desire to discuss the war, explains Camille N. Sullivan, a teacher of world history at Clear Creek High School in League City, Texas. Ms. Sullivan also finds the daily updates useful given the pace at which different events occurred. Interestingly, NewHourExtra was not a daily service, till the start of the Iraq war.

The number of schools that use the site is uncertain; NewsHourExtra states that the number of hits was 57,000 the week before the war started jumped to 128,000 during the second week of the war. Other sites that offer teaching resources are Discovery (DiscoverySchool), The New York Times (Learning Network) and CNN and Harcourt (CNN Student Network).

survey about the U.S.-Iraq conflict

People who want to share their views about the situation in Iraq now have another place to go. Researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison on Saturday announced the launch of a new, Internet-based survey about the U.S.-Iraq conflict.

The survey is open to anyone with Internet access. Web users can simply point their browser to http://www.journalism.wisc.edu/~dshah/protest/survey.html.

The researchers encourage you to participate in this study. “This is a great chance for people to tell us what they think about media coverage of the protests and the war,” said Professor Dhavan Shah, who is leading the project. “The more people we hear from, the more we can learn about public perceptions and actions.”

Shah is a professor in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication at UW-Madison. The study is part of a class he teaches on mass communication and democracy, and he hopes the data will help train the next generation of journalists and media scholars.

“This project grew out of the observation that many people find media coverage of this conflict to be biased against their views,” Shah said. “We hope that by surveying thousands of people and looking carefully at the results, we can better understand the cause of these perceptions and use them to improve media coverage."

For more information, contact Shah at protestsurvey@journalism.wisc.edu.
