10 STEPS TO CITIZEN JOURNALISM ONLINE is an interactive training module intended as a basic introduction to the new online world of Web logs or "blogs."

We all have news and stories to tell. But the Internet lets us tell our stories to the world. If you want to tell something important to others, this guide will help you. It's a basic outline that will help you build the machinery that runs your blog: your words and images. Other guides are technological. This guide tells you how to gather information and how to tell it and tell it accurately.

"The main issues we've had with comments are the same ones other news organizations have experienced: monitoring and tone. That said, I view commenting as an essential part of where online journalism is headed, and news organizations need to heal the existing wounds and not amputate the limb. For us, engaging readers -- through blogs, comments on articles, live discussions, hyperlinked bylines, social networking functions -- is absolutely essential: it builds immense loyalty with readers, it allows communities to form around common interests, it makes readers feel like they're participating and not watching from the outside. Most of that is lost on folks who don't understand the difficulties all Web sites face in attracting and retaining readers. Community is a differentiator."

"Unlike traditional Letters to the Editor, reader comments at The Times are not edited and the great majority of them are published. "The Net is a giant zero. It puts everybody zero distance from everybody and everything else. And it supports publishing and broadcasting at costs that round to zero as well.

It is essential for the mainstream media to understand that the larger information ecosystem is one that grows wild on the Net and supports everybody who wants to inform anybody else. It no longer grows inside the mainstream media's walled gardens.

Those gardens will continue to thrive only to the degree that they do two things: 1) open up; and 2) live symbiotically with individuals outside who want to work together for common purposes."

The Chronicle: Correct Me If I'm Wrong...

Almost every day, The Chronicle hears from readers (and some non-readers). Most of these comments -- voicemail, email and letters -- don't make it into our letters column. But they can be unusually passionate, irate, confounding and creative.

We listen to them and read them, and we think some of the more interesting and unusual ones are worth sharing.

So, today, we're starting a new feature to showcase these communications. It's called, "Correct Me If I'm Wrong."

Die New York Times beschäftigt sich "gezwungernermassen" mit CJ (Citizen Journalism) mit einem immernoch eher zynischen Unterton:

Starting tomorrow, users will be able to upload photos and videos to a section of Yahoo called You Witness News (news.yahoo.com/page/youwitnessnews). All of the submissions will appear on Flickr or a similar site for video. Editors at both Reuters and Yahoo will review the submissions and select some to place on pages with relevant news articles, just as professional photographs and video clips are woven into their news sites today.

People dont say, I want to see user-generated content, said Lloyd Braun, who runs Yahoos media group. They want to see Michael Richards in the club. If that happens to be from a cellphone, they are happy with a cellphone. If its from a professional photographer, they are happy for that, too.

Online news, microchunked, consumed on the fly, is fast food; the newspaper, fed by its newly invigorated journalist-brands, is the sit-down meal. In this marginally more optimistic future history, the roles of print and digital are inverted. Original newsin the form of stories, postings, and communitybegins online, while print offers an intelligent digest/redaction that readersand not only the elite and elderlycan peruse at their leisure. You could even call it Readers Digest.
