Des Rätsels Lösung: Citizen Journalists care about !

"A year ago, we didn't even call this citizen journalism. Back then, it was called open-source journalism.

The main difference between traditional journalism and citizen journalism is that traditional journalists are sent out to cover things they don't really care about; in other words, the next city council meeting isn't going to make or break their lives.

But a citizen journalist is not out to cover something, but to share it. For them, they want to tell everybody about their passion."

NY Times: We will follow our readers where they take us

"We will follow our readers where they take us," said Arthur Sulzberger Jr., publisher of The New York Times and chairman of the Times Company. "If they want us in print, we will be there in print. If they want us on the Web, we will be there on the Web. If they want us on cellphones or downloaded so they can hear us in audio, we must be there.

"At the end of the day, it is the audience we collect and the quality of that audience that is the critical factor, not the means by which we collect it."

Journalisten und Leser schreiben Fortsetzungsgeschichten

Fortsetzungsgeschichten, geschrieben von Journalisten und Leserinnen und Leser der online-Zeitung The Columbus Dispach:

createaclassic

The Online News Association reported yesterday that The Columbus Dispatch and Dispatch.com have started a project that will combine the creative writing energy of staff journalists with that of local writers.Called Create-a-Classic, the experiment initially involves four Dispatch editorial staff who have each written the first chapter of a novel. The paper has solicited unpublished writers in the Columbus area to contribute chapters of 1,000 to 1,500 words, with the goal of completing seven 10-chapter books by the end of the summer.

"Get me rewrite" - Participatory- oder Citizen-Journalism unter der Lupe der New York Times

PJNet macht auf einen Artikel in der der N.Y. Times aufmerksam, welcher das Phänomen des sogenannten Citizen-Journalism unter die Lupe nimmt: Beispiel ist unter anderen die Zeitung The News & Record:

In this world, "Get me rewrite" will in effect be a menu option, a way for unhappy readers to go online and offer their own versions of articles they do not like. Their hope is to convert the paper, through its Web site, www.news-record.com, into a virtual town square, where citizens have a say in the news and where every reader is a reporter.

This feature, part of a planned overhaul of The News & Record's Web site that is to begin next week, is a potent symbol of a transformation taking place across the country, where top-down, voice-of-God journalism is being challenged by what is called participatory journalism, or civic or citizen journalism.

Der Erfolgs-Faktor Online im Journalismus - Diesmal: Konsumenten-Magazine

Was bringt Erfolg?

A survey of 71 consumer magazines by the International Federation of the Periodical Press begins to identify success factors (PDF file) for magazine websites:

# The publishers' top goals are developing new online audiences and attracting new readers for the print editions.
# When it comes to money, building revenues and profits for the long term is deemed twice as important as building the business in the short term.
# More than 8 in 10 publishers expect to expand their Web efforts within the next year.
# More than half the publishers say their site has expanded the magazine's audience by more than 20 percent.
# Most of these self-described "successful" sites -- whose print counterparts typically publish monthly -- update their online content once or more a day.
# Six in 10 sites offer chat or online discussion.
# Two-thirds have attracted new, online-only advertisers.

Routes to Success for Consumer Magazine Websites (pdf) - Papier der International Federation of the Periodical Press (FIPP).

Da kommt einem doch glatt wieder das Zitat von Bruce Annan, Bell Globe Media, in den Sinn:

"Content alone is not King.
Content plus Interactivity is King.
The Secret ist Applications,
NOT Publication."
